ETCOG will host a public meeting to discuss a grant application for the East Texas region to address and manage contaminated properties. The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Brownfields program provides grants and technical assistance to safely assess, clean up, and sustainably reuse contaminated properties.
"We're inviting city and business leaders and members of the public to join us to learn what a brownfield is and how funding can be used in your community. We'll cover who can access this funding, which does not require a match, and how to get involved with our grant application for the region," said ETCOG's Community and Economic Development Manager, Chuck Vanderbilt.
The EPA launched the Brownfields program in 1995 and defined a "brownfield" as a property for which the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. Brownfield sites include abandoned factories and other industrial facilities, service stations, oil storage facilities, dry cleaning businesses, and any other business or facility that deals with hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants. Mine-scarred lands, properties impacted by asbestos or lead-based paint, and controlled substances can also be brownfields. There are estimated to be more than 450,000 brownfields in the United States.
The public meeting will be held virtually and at ETCOG offices located at 3800 Stone Road in Kilgore, Texas, on Tuesday, September 27, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Register to attend by visiting https://conta.cc/3TTO434.
