Prior to last week, many East Texans did not have access to any form of rental assistance and are commonly faced with the choice of a roof over their heads or food for their families. According to the American Community Survey data for 2014-2018, 33,692 people live in poverty in Anderson, Harrison, Panola, Upshur, and Van Zandt counties. These counties at present have had had no access to a rental assistance program.
The Texas Rent Relief Program was launched by TDHCA on February 15th to solve this problem and bring relief to millions across the United States. The program has emergency funds available to help Texas renters pay rent and utility bills (including past due rent and utilities).
Both landlords and tenants can use TexasRentRelief.com to create an account and submit their applications. The Texas Rent Relief Program can help renters with the following costs starting as far back as March 13, 2020 (this means you could potentially request assistance for up to 11 months of past-due bills):
What is needed from you? We need this program to be shared as much as possible so those in need can hear about it and access it. Please share this information on social media and post fliers in any offices with access by the public. You can download a flier here at the link below. Thank you for your help in spreading the word!
